Hiding In Plain Sight

My previous experience has been working with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child molestation. I first learned about child sex trafficking when I met a young girl in custody at the detention center. The juvenile probation officer introduced me to this case. I learned about the signs and how to work with girls that have experienced this horrible crime.

From that point, I began working with high-risk youth vulnerable to being victims of trafficking. Although this type of victim is a small percentage of our agency (The Healing Journey), we still will give it our all-in helping victims of child sex trafficking.

This was different for me personally when I found out more about how trafficking victims see themselves. I can look back and recognize that some of my past cases would have been young girls who were possibly trafficked. The dynamics of these cases are vastly different since most of the victims do not disclose who their traffickers are. They want to protect them, or they feel that they are in love and will not work with anyone who can be involved in their relationship.
